Scream 4 Opening Analysis

Scream 4 (2011) Director: Wes Craven

The film starts out with the company ident for Dimension films, over the top of this a phone rings it then fades into a the phone ringing and a teenage girl with brown hair picks up, possibly the survivor. The person on the end of the phone asks "Who am I speaking to?" and the girl hangs up saying "Wrong number" another teenage girl is introduced. They are about to watch a movie and say they are going scary. They then go on about the reason's why it was good and bad, the girl who picked up the phone starts playing around with a knife like in Scream 1, which the scream queen did.

The phone rings again and they are both threatened at being killed so they hang the phone up thinking it's a prank. The phone goes off again and they ignore it, then one of the girls mobiles vibrates and the girl who's phone vibrates starts panicking and checks to see if the doors locked. As they are about to the door bell rings, one of the girl's opens the door.

The girl who opened the door is now stood outside a longshot of the girl inside is now on screen, her phone vibrates and it say's "I'm not outside i'm beside you" she is then stabbed by Ghost face. The other girl attempts to run out through the front door but is stabbed by another Ghost face. The girl falls down next to the door and the camera pans down alongside her at a medium close shot.

The screen then fades out to reveal the title "Stab 6", this is being watched by 2 blonde girls; you know this as they continue to zoom out until you are in between them as they are sat on a sofa. A medium close 2 shot reveals both girls from the front, the girl on the left is claiming that it is the death of horror while the girl on the right say's it scared her and it would be twitter now, instead of a facebook stalker.

The girl on the left gets up, she seems to be a scream queen due to wearing low cut tops and short- shorts, whereas the girl on the right is more covered up. The girl on the right continues to praise slasher films, while the girl on the right seem's to not like sequels. As the girl on the left continues to rant about what is to be expected, the girl on the left stabs her and say's "Did that suprise you?" She then uses the remote and it zooms in onto the title "Stab 7".

The shot zooms out again from the title of "Stab 7" to another pair of teenage girls both with blonde hair, one who loves horror films and one who doesn't they then identify the location of where they live, Woodsborough. The setting of all the other Scream films. A lot of close ups are used here as the girls talk about the Stab series and then about Sidney Prescott.

The girl who knows about the Stab series who is shortly identified as Jenny heres something upstairs, while the other girl claims that she does it all the time to scare her. Jenny is now upstairs while the girl downstairs, now known as Marny is asked to pick it up, Ghost face's voice is on and it is done by Jenny as a joke the phone then hangs up. You then hear Marny get hit and start choking, Jenny runs downstairs to find the phone left on the floor with the lights out. She blames this on Marny playing a joke on her. Medium close up and medium shots are used to show she is confident while walking round her house.

The phone rings and Ghost face's voice is on again; she thinks this is another one of her friends. He say's "Marny's part got cut way back" this denotes that she is now dead; but Jenny is the "Dumb blonde with big tit's, we'll have some fun with you" this could denote that she is the scream queen. A longshot is know shown of her which makes her look inferior and is told to start running, Marny's body is then thrown through the window as she starts to kneel down Ghost face tries to knife her but she runs upstairs, as she goes through a door to the garage she is knifed in the back, she tries to open the garage door and crawl through but it is lowered onto her back, at this point there is an extreme longshot of her to show how much inferior she is now than she was before. She is again dragged into the garage and stabbed one final time in the chest.
