Saw IV Opening Analysis

Saw IV (2007) Director: Darren Lynn Bousman

The film start's by showing 2 company idents one for Lions Gate and another for Twisted Pictures, it then reshows the text "A Lions Gate Release" on screen in a white font, this is also placed in the top left corner but is blurred and is in a bigger font but only shows the "ate Release" part, they do this again for Twisted Pictures Presents. Low string music is played over the top of these; which then cuts to a close up of an operation table which is panning over a body.

It first pans over the foot then the leg which is then fades to a black screen. Text is placed over this which say's "A Burg/ Koules/ Hoffman Production" this is done like the other 2 idents. It then shows the body of the person on the operating table; this time panning across his chest up to his neck, it then fades out showing shows various tools such as saws. This fades out again to reveal the text which say's "A Film By Darren Lynn Bousman"

It fades in again, to reveal the whole body from the foot at almost a level shot; showing a tag on the person's foot this may indicate that the person is dead, a doctor walks in and turns the light on, this shows the body which is very pale, it then shows a long shot of the person washing his hands. It pans over the tools which are various knives. This may now denote that the doctor is actually a surgeon, another walks in and looks worried as he is placing a neck brace onto the dead body; who is then shown to be Jacob.

It then cuts to a longshot of his body, where the surgeon puts a towel type cover over him and grabs a sound recorder, where he identifies the person. A close up shows the surgeon using a knife to cut the skin off of his head, which reveals a skull. Where he grabs another knife; he then talks about what he is doing to the body as the other surgeon is writing something down. He then uses several knives to take of the back on the skull which he places in a container and takes out the brain, where he pulls the skin back over. This uses several close ups as well as medium shots to both emphasise the gore that is occurring.  The second surgeon then weighs the brain on a scale; which is shown via a medium shot. Quickly cutting to the other surgeon cutting across the body's chest. He then takes the stomach out and opens it where he finds something; and tells the other surgeon to "get homdicide here, now". This is shown as an extreme longshot which slowly zooms in.

When the homicide detective arrives he asks to see it, where it cuts to the man swallowing a recording tape. He then plays it where it ends with "The game has just begun".
